Exporting to files

Exporting files from your library allows you to save crosswords and/or templates to your file system. Several formats are supported, organised into sections:

  • Crossword Wrangler native file types (.cwx for crosswords, .cwt for templates) export the full Crossword Wrangler data model. These are currently only supported by Crossword Wrangler and are the recommended formats for backup and restore purposes. Circular grids can only be exported in this format; none of the open formats currently support them.
  • *.ipuz: The IPUZ format. This is a highly versatile open puzzle format that is widely supported, and covers many puzzle types, including blocked and barred crosswords.
  • *.puz: This is an older but widely used format, introduced for Across Lite. This format supports only simple, blocked puzzles, so barred puzzles cannot be exported in this format, and advanced features such as unclued lights and multiple clue sets are not supported.
  • *.jpz: This is another open puzzle format, and is used by applications such as CrossFire and Crossword Compiler. It supports blocked and barred grids. Some Crossword Wrangler features are not supported by this file type, including solution bars, un-numbered clues, clue notes and some cell decorations.
  • *.pdf: Export crosswords as PDF documents, suitable for printing or sharing digitally.
  • *.docx: Export crosswords as Word documents, allowing further editing and formatting.

These formats allow you to export the crossword grid as images, suitable for various uses.

  • *.png: Export the crossword grid as an image file, useful for embedding in websites or presentations.
  • *.svg: Export the crossword grid as a scalable vector graphic, ideal for high-quality prints and web use.
  • *.txt: Export the list of clues as a plain text file, suitable for reference or further processing.
